      The lesson is to weigh your chances and evaluate the likelihood of a win and calcualte the short and long term costs of a loss, before deciding whether to try or not.

          In many instances the win is not assured, but it is likelier than not. In others it's not even likely, but deemed possible - and that chance is considered enough to counter whatever the costs of a loss might be. For some, defeat may be practically certain; but the messsage sent in making the attempt is more important than the cost of the loss. Taken to the extreme there of course have been people who knew the cost would be loss of life, not just job or love or associates or material goods; and still they have gone ahead and acted.
