  •  Again, you base this on something that will (9+ / 0-)

never come true in this country.

If we could get rid of guns...

It's not going to happen. There are 283 million firearms in this country, in civilian hands. A large majority of these are not registered. How are you going to remove all of the firearms?

    •  And death in the classroom is the price we pay (0+ / 0-)

So if guns are here to stay, then we can expect 80,000 gun-related injuries here in America every year.  We can expect that 10 person out of every 100,000 Americans will die from a gunshot.  We can expect that every year, someone will shoot up a school and kill 5, 6, or 7 students at random.  We can expect more unarmed teen-agers shot dead in the streets.

I would hope that we have a better message for our children than "the problem is too big, so we won't even try".

Here are some other things that were never going to happen in America: it was never going to happen that slavery would end; it was never going to happen that women would be allowed to vote; it was never going to happen that workers would enjoy a 40 hour work week in a safe workplace; it was never going to happen that women would be allowed to serve in the military; it was never going to happen that a black man would be elected to the presidency.

We are not limited because the problem is too big, we are limited by the size of our imaginations.  (That last line sounds really great, but I have to admit, in the case of gun use in the US, we are also limited by the willingness of the gun industry to corrupt our democracy and our law-makers to increase their profits)

      •  No. (8+ / 0-)

You're saying that no matter what, if firearms remain as present as they are now, you'll have those numbers above for injuries, deaths, etc.

        This is not true.

Firearms have become MORE common. More people carry a firearm now. Firearm laws became liberalized. Crime has dropped.

If you want to tackle the violence problem in this country, you go for the root cause, not just one symptom:

        Jobs
        Single payer
        Jobs
        Marijuana legalization
        Jobs
        Better social safety nets
        Jobs
        Education
        Jobs

You want to tackle the big problems, let's get going on those.
