    i love the term.

    i tried the gloomy Russians, but couldn't absorb all the diminutives for everyone's name and invariable lost the story by about chapter three (chapter 1/2 for W/P, to my shame).

    these titles remain on the list of books i'm saving for the nursing home, though.  like Finnegan's Wake and The Rise and Fall of the Roman Empire.

        to slog through them both.

        but i prefer colleen mccullough's fictionalized rome to gibbon's fossilized rome.  i own gibbon and joyce and i continually crack them open in the (so far) futile hope that i am ready.

        i went the heavy poetry route and have devoured the massives like: paradise lost, the faerie queen, canterbury tales, the rape of the lock, the rime of the ancient mariner, and the stella and astrophil cycle by sydney.

        i'll get to it soon enough, i'm sure.
