      Ds see human suffering and wonder what they can do to relieve it. Rs see human suffering and wonder how they can profit from it.

      •  Actually, they didn't expect (0+ / 0-)

        elections (by the people) at all.  The states were given authority to appoint electors in whatever manner the several legislatures should choose.  No popular vote was required at all.

        Naive, perhaps, but the Founders did not anticipate anyone actually running for the office of President; they expected that the Electors would choose a fit person and that such person would, reluctantly a la George Washington, put aside his regular work and accept the burden of office.
