Humphrey could have beaten Nixon had he disavowed the war earlier; he wanted it both ways: to please the hawks like Dick Daley and the liberal wing of the party.

Reagan didn't need a deal to beat Carter. Inflation was 18% and Carter was a hapless executive. On policy I agreed with Carter but he was not able to work with Congress. Teddy Kennedy was so alarmed at this he challenged him in the primary. Add to this the independent candidacy of John Anderson and Regan's victory is no surprise.

Kerry may have been screwed in Ohio in 2004. But h is was a terribly run campaign. What is it about candidates from Massachusetts that make them run such lame campaigns? Dukakis, Kerry, and lately, Romney; the Bay State curse apparently crosses party lines.

The point should be clear: while Republican electoral crimes certainly exist, past history has shown that Democratic candidates that don't take solid positions, waffle, and try too hard to please the dinosaurs in the party generally are headed to defeat with or without Republican tricks.
