I don't condone or agree, but I understand.  I'm sure it went something like this.

Always had fantasies about being a cop, watched too many Rambo movies as a kid.  He's the kind of person you definitely don't want being a cop, because he wants it out of a desire for personal power and having the state's blessing to use force.

Doesn't become a cop, for whatever reason.  Other career.  Who knows?  A lot of guys like him who long for power have other ways to get their fix.  It's a typical thing with guys like him who have power fantasies and don't have the maturity or imagination to deal with them.  Security guard.  Neighborhood watch.  Buying a big parcel of land and patrolling the borders with a gun.

He chose the second.  He thinks he's doing his neighborhood a great service.  Thinks that if he pursues his mandate aggressively, he'll get respect from others.  A little danger is okay, because that plays well to his buddies when they're over drinking beer.  So he picks a random person... could have been anyone, as long as they looked suspicious in his eyes... and goes after them.  He calls it in like the good citizen he is.  The real cops tell him not to pursue.  He does anyway, because all of his action movie heroes played fast and loose with the rules and they got rewarded.  Maybe, maybe he can even prevent a real crime, like Batman.

So he confronts the innocent kid, who is understandably freaked out at being followed.  Things escalate quickly, and before he knows it Zimmerman is standing over a twitching body with a smoking gun in his hands.

He still doesn't get it.  The law will protect him.  The kid really was up to no good.  He's still gonna be a hero, even if this costs him some scary moments in court.  just another story to tell his buddies, and now he's legit because he's actually fired a gun.

But now, reality has hit.  Maybe he's remorseful.  Maybe he's still in denial, because assuming the mantle of victim is his surest way out of this mess.  Who knows?

But I guarantee you that he wishes, more than anything else, that life came with a reset button.

It's the new cold war, with the arm race escalating at every turn. Move to the hallways, and keep your heads down.

and I wait for them to interrupt my drinking from this broken cup
