    generally understood to be acceptable to use a term (nonwithstanding rapidly changing social norms).

    It may be that using 'rape of the earth' is no longer socially acceptable in the sense that it has traditionally been used.  I could believe that.

    Still, the fact that is passed by consensus with that phrase in it (when it could have been objected to and probably changed without too much ado) suggests that there is at least some doubt as to whether it being no longer socially acceptable is the norm.
