    Although I would say that the term standing waves provides a little more detail.

        That is the sound reaching your ears.  Your fingerings force the instrument to generate a resonant standing wave at the pitch that we hear.  The extra little standing waves that are also generated which are peculiar to the bassoon are what make it sound different than say a double bass.
