The one thing they couldn't ignore would be an ET space ship landing in a very public place.  Probability approximately zero, but it's fun to speculate.

The cure for religious extremism is actually very simple: more good sex.  Seriously, and the neurophysiology supports this in spades.  The whole 1960s "free love" culture cured our society of puritanism for as long as it lasted, and then came the backlash.  There was a precursor to that in the 1920s and another in the 1950s.  The trick is to make it stick next time.

As it turns out, nonsexual physical affection is also an apparent cure for puritanism.  If you haven't read Body pleasure and the origins of violence by James Prescott, you need to.  The paper is available online:

And can easily be found by just searching the words "prescott violence."

"As a developmental neuropsychologist I have devoted a great deal of study to the peculiar relationship between violence and pleasure. I am now convinced that the deprivation of physical sensory pleasure is the principal root cause of violence."

"James W. Prescott, a neuropsychologist, is a health scientist administrator at the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development in Bethesda, Maryland. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the American Humanist Association."

"Minus two votes for the Democrat" equals "plus one vote for the Republican." Arithmetic doesn't care about your feelings.
