  •  Oh, jeez. (4.00)
That's not deception or fraud, man, that's just vanity.  She used to be fluent in Russian, and that ability faded over time.  It's unreasonable to expect her to keep track of what other people say about skills she used to have.

    How about you? Would you...

    • point out to a potential employer that, despite having once completed a college degree, you've since forgotten most of what you learned in Calc II?  Or would you just say nothing, confident that you could brush up again if you had to do so?
    • relinquish the merit badges you earned as a Boy Scout, since you no longer remember the difference between a bowline and a trailer-hitch?
    • admit to a potential intimate partner, in case she heard about you from other sources, that you no longer have the staying power you did at 18?  Or would you say nothing, and 'silently let the lie go on'?

What I demand of Condoleeza Rice is that she be qualified for her job, and that she does it with integrity and without compromising the interest of the American people.  On that count, she utterly fails.

I see no reason to slag her for a trifle like this, and I think the case you're making is quite petty.

    •  She *used* to be fluent??? (3.00)

I don't know that, either!  She never lived in Russia (at the time, the USSR) and I've never heard anyone say that she took any intensive training (like at the Defense Language Institute in Monterey).  Nope, she's a poseur and a fraud and she is a on LARGE scale (no once could have imagined planes being used as WMDs) and on a small scale ("fluent in Russian").

And if you Google this thing (e.g., Rice, fluent, Russian) and look at the various freeper and littlegreenfootballs wingnut blogs, you'll see that this kind of lying tripe was used to build her up to be SoS.  So, then, our over-hyped SoS -- who's a "fluent Russian speaker" -- gets on Russian radio and makes a FOOL out of herself, the Admin and the United States.  Sorry, but that IS important.  It is to me, at least.

      •  Man, you're using a high standard (none)
        for fluency.

What you're calling "fluent" I'd call "bilingual." And as a bilingual I can tell you there's a huge difference between the two.

Which isn't to defend the right's promotion of her fluency to support her candidacy to State. I'm just talking about what the word means to me, and always has.

        •  I'm not sure I know the difference (4.00)
I'm fluent and bilingual.  I dream in several languages and can write competently in two of them.  I don't know the difference between being bilingual and fluent.  If you aren't bilingual, how can you be fluent?  After a few days in Germany and a case of beer, I can get buy in German, but I'd never claim to be fluent.  I could once carry on a conversation in Mandarin, but that language has been lost for decades.  I suspect her Russian was about where my Mandarin was 40 years ago.
    •  I agree this is petty (none)
There are endless policy issues and philisophical issues on which to call Dr. Rice to task.
