I know what kept me in the closet longer than I should have stayed in it, and the dear departed was one of the forces that did so.  I'm happy that you don't have that problem.  Snark is easy, isn't it.

All it takes is security in your own civil rights to make you complacent.

sometimes thinking about how homophobia has blighted my life.  I am glad to see (thx to comments below) that Wallace later regretted that report.  I've never seen that 60 Minutes report, but that toxic cloud of rejection was the atmosphere I grew up in, and it made me see myself as crippled, with a "condition" that meant a life without hope of romantic love, unless either I joined the damned or a miracle happened to turn me straight.  (I eventually chose the first option, discarding as fictional that god who would have a book published proscribing something manifestly not evil.  I've come out to family as gay, but now I'm embarrassed to tell them I'm atheist.)

It wasn't just Wallace though: that report was symptomatic of the age.  His report helped push that narrative but he was standing on the shoulders of haters of previous generations.  And Wallace did a lot of excellent journalism too in his career.  If I can forgive myself for my own internalized homophobia, I can forgive Wallace for this pack of lies -- since it seems that, in time, he really was sorry for it.
