that he needs to excite were all at church celebrating the most important holy day of all, he's out surfing?   Do Mormons not "do" the Resurrection thing???  I'm not being snarky.   I just thought that the rising from the dead thing was an/the integral part of Christianity.  Without it, Jesus is just another guy who was executed for nothing.

      •  When I read the Gospels, I was struck by the (5+ / 0-)

fact that although the Sanhendrin had their minions watching him from the time John baptized him, they didn't really decide he had to be "dealt with" until he roughed up the money changers and crooked livestock brokers in the Temple.

In every culture, in every age, it's dangerous to mess with the fat cats' cash flow.

I can remember thinking in a similar vein at some point in my development.  Why then?  At the time, I didn't make the connection to the cash flow.  It was pretty clear the he was making fools of them, though, and that would never do....

As a Catholic church musician, though, I can say that we have spent the last four days (nights, really, for three of them) in church.  There are surely people who might consider this kind of recreation somehow disrespectful.

I have mixed thoughts about the whole thing.  Any candidate who's really doing the work (Newt would not be included in that group, even before he trimmed his campaign back) must need to get out and just do something physical.  It's not good for anyone to live the kind of life that candidates must endure for so long.

OTOH, it wouldn't hurt to think ahead to how such diversion might be perceived by others.  For instance, a half-day spent working on a Habitat house or some similar project would provide the needed exertion and couldn't possibly be perceived in a negative way.  Well, maybe it could by someone, but....

          •  Heh. I wouldn't go that far (0+ / 0-)

but in politics, where perception quickly becomes reality, it seems like they'd be a little more careful of these images.  I'll grant that it shouldn't be this way, that no politician should have to pander to or observe someone else's religious sentiments, but as a practical matter, they must.  Given the current realities of running for office, allowing the opportunity for a picture like that to be released on a high holy day is just stupid.

    •  Not much Jesus in Easter... (6+ / 0-)

...considering Easter herself was a pagan fertility goddess.

      •  The early church was masterful... (0+ / 0-)

in co-opting pagan celebrations for their own ends.  Not only that, they also made saints out of gods and goddesses (Brigid, for one).  It makes perfect sense.  If you can't swing people away from their cyclic celebrations, just use them for your own ends.  The fact that we still observe them attests to the effectiveness of the tactic.
