  •  The First Christians were socialists (13+ / 0-)

    Warren is just plain wrong.

Here is an excerpt from Acts, Chapter 4:

All the believers were one in heart and mind. No one claimed that any of their possessions was their own, but they shared everything they had. 33 With great power the apostles continued to testify to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus. And God’s grace was so powerfully at work in them all 34 that there were no needy persons among them. For from time to time those who owned land or houses sold them, brought the money from the sales 35 and put it at the apostles’ feet, and it was distributed to anyone who had need.
Warren doesn't believe in redistribution when the early Christians and Apostles did?
    •  bingo! (10+ / 0-)

Was just posting the same thing at the same time.  What's ironic is that in our cycle of scripture readings, this is the text for THIS SUNDAY.  So important that it's one of the first things we talk about in the Easter season, once we get past The Big Day.

Yes, folks, that's socialism in yer Bibles.

      And compassion and empathy.

That "one in heart and mind" business is pretty important.

    •  In 2008 when McCain was going on (3+ / 0-)

about Obama and "redistibution", a local fundamentalist church put up on their digital signboard  "Redistribution is socialism not capitalism".

I actually pulled into their parking lot one evening, went in, and demanded to talk to someone in authority. I told them that quoting McCain was advocacy of a specific candidate and a violation of IRS codes with respect to their tax exemption.   They pretty much told me they'd say whatever they wanted, showed me out, and locked the door behind me.  My parting words were  "Oh, and JESUS was ALL FOR redistribution!".

The tax rules are here: IRS Guidance for Charities, Churches, and Educational Organizations - Political Campaign Intervention.  The gist is, that any non-profit (including ours) can advocate as vigorously as they like for an ISSUE, but not for a CANDIDATE.   Naturally certain gray areas do arise.

But the next day their sign was changed.
