  •  I agree. (4+ / 0-)

    As usual the wingnuts view things from their true believer point of view.

    To consider Panem as communist is a complete aberration.

    I have not read the books but I hope this is a good summary;

    What I find interesting is the possible role of global warming in the chain of events that lead to the existence of Panem. Am I right?

    Daily Kos an oasis of truth. Truth that leads to action.

    •  I just finished the first book. (4+ / 0-)

      The author mentions coastal cities being swamped, along with other global environmental distasters.

    •  I did wonder what the ideology behind (5+ / 0-)

      the Capitol City tyranny is. It's never made clear. Even if the government doesn't have the people's interests at heart, there has to be some rationale in its propaganda for its existence.

      Because Hunger Games is written in first person from Katniss' point of view, all we know is that she never believed in the regime. "It's all about how grateful we should be to the Capitol."

      RWers use the terms socialist-communist-Nazi-fascist interchangeably against us. They never bother to distinguish them. All of the words just mean "bad guy."

        "You should be grateful to the Capitol".  That's the ideology. The Capitol keeps saying they're necessary and you need them, and even though nobody knows WHY they need the Capitol, life is already so shitty they don't want to test it.

        As long as you give people some sort of "game" where they have a chance of slightly improving their shitty lot, they'll hold on to that game rather than risk jumping into the unknown, even if they suspect the game is all bullshit.
