    a pre-Christian Breton epic by a monk who overlay the original with a Christian perspective. He teased apart the different mythologies in that text, essentially deconstructing Beowulf linguistically, and Tolkien is still the definitive authority on that text. There is no way that Tolkien's mythologies would have blended unconsciously but rather be deliberate on his part.

    I would say the backstory has more specific applicability to Christianity. Tolkien despised allegory so it's definitely not a direct comparison.

      I read Beowulf long long ago but didn't connect.  I should go back to it, and maybe look at what Tolkien has to say.
