Yes, by today's standards he was. He also proposed a form of universal health care. The standards have changed since 1970.

of the American political center has been accomplished by brute force of cubic money.  There is no ideological basis that rationalizes the 'changing standards', the American left has been complicit by co-opting whatever ideological center ground is ceded for partisan gain as the right propels that drift with massive bought media resources.

I reject the Republican idea that the ideological center has changed- what was right or left in Nixon's or JFK's day largely still is. Nixon was in fact far to the ideological left of Obama on many issues, one cannot credibly call Nixon ideologically right wing and Obama left-leaning unless one buys into the Republican redefinition of the ideological center.  Why would any putative lefty do such a thing?

Obama is, Rovian Overton Window shifting legerdemain aside, a classic center-right corporatist pro-military, authoritarian, status quo Republican.  The left hasn't left the Democratic Party; the Democratic Party has left the left.  We carry the right's water by pretending otherwise.

Advisors for President-Elect Barack Obama feared the new administration would face a coup if it prosecuted Bush-era war crimes, according to a new report out this morning.

How long are we going to facilitate the long rightward drift?  And how are we to fight it if we are not willing (as the right is with Republican candidates) to seriously punish our "leaders" in the only ways that matter to them?
