  •  An obvious weak point in GOP ideology: (6+ / 0-)

They claim they want equal opportunity to become successful.  Why then, should they oppose any measure that would equalize the quality of school districts, and any measure that broadens economic access to college?

It's so obvious that it hardly bears mentioning, but the Randian dystopia espoused by so many on the right could hardly take us any farther from equal opportunity.  If quality education and health care go to those whose families can afford them, where is the equality of opportunity for poor children relative to wealthy?

I can only think of two ways to generate roughly equal opportunity.  One is to completely socialize education at every level, so that higher education is equally attainable to children of the rich and poor.  The other would be if higher education could only be paid for by one's own sweat labor, and not by money.  The latter seems intriguing but impractical, so I guess I would settle for the former.

The pretention of their equality argument is just begging to be poked at - we should take every opportunity.
