I'm what many people would call a fundamentalist Christian. I am also very left wing. Rick Warren is a wonderful Christian who does care for the poor. But I fear that our relationship with the republican party is blurring our moral compass (on many issues not just this one). I am thinking of posting diaries for this website on these sorts of issues from a "fundamentalist" left wing perspective.  Would I be welcome here?

I'm interested in learning how you know that

Rick Warren is a wonderful Christian who does care for the poor.
I'm just not seeing it from what he says and does and preaches and how he lives. What am I missing?

I agree that anyone who is following the leadership of the Republican party has a serious problem with a blurred moral compass on most issues.

I'm also interested to learn more about the difference between a left wing fundamentalist Christian and a right wing fundamentalist Christian. Do both not follow the same Bible? Is the difference in their interpretation or in the passages they find most relevant? I truly did not know there was such a person as a left wing Christian fundamentalist. Please tell me more.

I don't know Rick warren personally but I do know a lot of people who have right wing political views but do a lot of volunteer work and care for the poor.

Well a fundamentalist is a derogatory term really for someone who takes their faith more seriously than any other area of their life and have conservative theology (not conservative in the political sense but believe in a straight forward reading of the Bible). I would identify that and a left wing fundamentalist is someone who is left because of this rather than in spite of this. I'm interested in writing a series of diaries on why I come to this conclusion. I would say that a fundamentalist by definition finds all verses in the Bible relevant but I would say that a straight forward reading would cause me to veer left.

Do you think people here would be interested in this diary?

Warren personally, how do you know

Rick Warren is a wonderful Christian who does care for the poor.
             ??

I also know a lot of people with right wing political views who do a lot of volunteer work and care for the poor. Knowing other socially progressive right wingers doesn't mean Warren is a wonderful Christian who cares for the poor.

Given that most of the people who responded to this diary think the opposite, I am wondering what brings you to the conclusion you have drawn about Warren.

          What do you mean by

a straight forward reading of the Bible
? Is that how you see left wing fundamentalist Christianity differs from right wing fundamentalist Christianity? Are there any other differences between the two? If you find all verses of the bible relevant, how would a left wing fundamentalist Christian act on the verses of Leviticus, for instance?

          You asked

Do you think people here would be interested in this diary?
Perhaps. But I am probably not the best person to ask.

From my experience reading and commenting on (not writing) the diaries on Daily Kos, I would suggest you be prepared to have your diary dissected thoroughly. There are very intelligent (and sometimes argumentative) people in this forum. How thick is your skin? How brave and sure are you? Are you willing to stand up for your points and back them with reliable sources? IMHO, writing here is not for the faint of heart or the writer of little conviction.

On the other hand, what do you have to lose?
