    The graphs seem to indicate a slow but steady decline for decades, then a precipitous drop with the emergence of China as a global manufacturer.

    It's like we reached a tipping point, teetering along, ready to fall over at the first good shove.

    That's why ignoring the manufacturing as a proportion of total unemployment is wrong-headed. As the workforce grows, industries that don't grow with it should be a red flag.
