  •  Not everyone has the same mixture of cinicism (12+ / 0-)

and prudishness as you and may also not know this kind of visceral hate exists. If even just one more person is made aware of the hate that festers on that site because of this diary we're better off as a community.

    •  I have to admit that as much as (7+ / 0-)

I am aware of many facts and statistics on racism; lived thru the 50's and 60's with very activist parents, the open level of really vile comments in a forum that can be accessed by the general public was much worse than I had suspected. I don't go looking for that stuff because it does my stress and anxiety levels no good.

It concerns me that the level of violent rhetoric is so high. The reinforcement of shared anger and violent action ideas creates, if you will, a mental mob. How long does it take for how many to act on those emotions?

People who want to know what is really going on and the people who are making these comments are the only ones who have an accurate perspective.

The rest of the country is absorbed in the rat race - whether they want to be or not. They are too busy, too tired and probably suspect they don't want to know. It isn't in a place they will see or hear it, until the violence is carried out.

      •  Or you find it right under your nose (3+ / 0-)

and are unable to ignore it.

        •  We were in Gettysburg yesterday and while (5+ / 0-)

driving along the road near Cemetery Ridge, where you can see much of the battlefield, my husband remarked that it was hard to believe that we'd ever descended into a civil war and that it was good that it could never happen again.

I was speechless. I asked him if he'd ever looked at a right-wing website and seen the hate there. He said he thought people like that were always around and that for the most part you just ignore them.

My fear is that with the internet it's all to easy for people like this to hook up, have their vile ideas re-enforced, join up and act.
