In the Old Days both parties had people of all persuasions from way right to way left, like Mom and Pop had a store. Sears sold everything in its catalogs.

    Then came specialty retailers.

Just the same, the parties realized they could sell themselves to voters more easily by specializing.

The Rs went after that full tilt. THey became the Product Party, marketing themselves 24-7.

The Dems are a little more spastic about it.

I once took a course in grad school which was informally called "Marketing is Not Advertising."

    Here, "Governing is Not Marketing."

by middlemen.  It may just be because economists divided the population into producers and consumers and the guys at the middle got overlooked.  So their ranks swelled ever larger until now we've got contractors everywhere.  Indeed, our public corporations, which used the be the epitome of efficiencies of scale, have been divided up into contractor and sub-contract operations. It's not a matter of the center not being able to hold; there is no center any longer.

And why?  Because the private sector envied the revenue stream and steady income of the public corporations. Our risk-taking entrepreneurs wanted to take over the public sector so they could be secure.
