Natural seeps are an indication of a working petroleum system in a region, and they're used in frontier (unproven) areas. OTOH, seeps are leaks that indicate a particular spot has a blown trap that is unlikely to retain large volumes of hydrocarbons. There are hundreds of known natural seeps in the northern GOM, including some near this location. Some of the seeps create large oil slicks visible on satellite.
