To the Religious Right, raising kids is the least important part of parenthood; parents' biggest accomplishment is conceiving them or, in the case of women, gestating them. In particular, conceiving a kid is a meritworthy achievement on the part of the father (this "logic" extends further; the mere presence of the father in the home is considered the most important factor in the kids' well-being. The underlying ideology is that being male means being able to take credit for things that require little or no effort).

This is all, of course, consistent with a religious belief (note a very specific one, not "religion" in general) that the period between birth and death is the least important part of one's life.

If you integrate fantasy with reality, you do not instantiate reality. If you mix cow pie with apple pie, it does not make the cow pie taste better; it makes the apple pie worse. --Mark Crislip
