I understand the spirit of the response, but I think when people accuse us of being communists, we have to set the record straight that we are not communists, instead of avoiding the discussion and flashing a bunch of numbers. And here's why.

In the USSR, which was actually communist, unemployment rates were somewhere between zero and 1.5%. So what are we trying to say here -- that we're not communist enough?!

GDP is a very misleading indicator. Sometimes GDP grows as a result of poor economic conditions. Included in GDP are health care costs, crime costs, crisis response, and so on. Just because GDP is growing, it doesn't mean times are good, necessarily.

So this person, whoever he is, did not walk away disabused of his belief that Democrats are communists. Just that maybe Democrats think communism is better.

    But we are NOT communists.

Here's how I would respond to this person:

There are two extremes. On one side of the extreme are communists, who believe the government should be responsible for every facet of society. Government should provide all the goods and services (all of them), and there should be no public sector what-so-ever.

Nobody in Washington advocates that extreme. Nobody.

The opposite extreme is the abolishment of government -- that government should provide absolutely no goods or services to anyone under any circumstances, and that all our needs should be met by the private sector. That is the other extreme.

Are there people in Washington advocating that extreme? Yes. They're called the Republican party.

is not going to respond to facts or reason or logic. The best way to deal with them is mockery. The diarist was very successful in that. It's even better to just ignore them, turn your back on them and walk away. But if they piss you off to the point where you can help responding, mockery is the best policy. IMHO
