Their focus is on the possibility that GZ violated Trayvon's civil rights.  It's too bad they aren't focusing on police corruption and institutional racism, because even though they claim they will follow the clues wherever they lead, if they are sticking to GZ then the trail leads away from the good old boy network.

The very treatment of GZ in the police station was classic good ole' boy.  The botched investigation was good ole' boy. The smear campaign, the witness tampering... Do you need more?

yes, the treatment of this case is a scandal from day one.  Especially day one.

What I'm trying to point out is that despite a specific request from the Martin family, and an open invitation from the city fathers of Sanford (who want to save their reputations and avoid a riot that seemed at least possible 48 hours ago) the focus of the federal investigation is NOT centered upon the activities of the Sanford PD and Norm Wolfinger's decision to release GZ the night of the shooting, and then to double down on this decision not to press charges as the lead homicide investigator started working the case and came to the speedy conclusion that Zimmerman's story didn't pass the smell test.

Instead, the statements by Holder clearly state that the DoJ is in Seminole county to find out if Trayvon's civil rights were violated BY GEORGE ZIMMERMAN.  To me this says that the DoJ is willing to look only so far and so deep into this case, and now that the state's angle, the special prosecutor has the killer locked up and charged with a capitol crime there will be less public outcry for a full investigation into the institutional problems and potential corruption going on.

The smear campaign and witness tampering are the lemon next to the pie, in my opinion.  But I don't think the DoJ is really showing the will to look into all this stuff.  Instead they will produce some FBI analysis of "goon/c**n/spoon/june and other sideshow activities that leave the local authorities, who may be complicit in real crimes of their own out of the spotlight.

It's like if someone was giving out free land mines, and your kid stepped on one at the playground.  The AG announces he will assist in the investigation of who planted the land mine that got your kid, but doesn't say anything about who is likely still handing out free land mines....

( I hope I am dead wrong here and Holder catches a rat's nest of conspiring rednecks in local authority, but that's not how I see this playing out given what I have seen so far.)
