  •  I used up all my vacation time (8+ / 0-)

to take my kids to the doctor after my second child was born.   My employer had the same rule - if you have to leave work to take care of a sick child, you had to use your vacation time.

When chicken pox struck both kids, I was out of vacation time and had to hire someone from a sitting service to come into my home to care for them.  It was very expensive and I felt so guilty for not being there with them.

Within a couple of years, we moved to another state, downsized and I quit my job to stay home full time.  It was a big hit to my career and our income, but I couldn't stand working 70 hr. weeks while caring for an infant and a toddler with no vacation time.

I'm sure I'm not the only career woman who had to give up a successful career simply due to the inflexibility of an employer.
