a fairly substantial escalation in Afghanistan. Many troops are being moved their from other places, especially Special Forces.
And I don't think expressing opposition to the war is hide-rateable on this site, even if you don't agree with it.
Of COURSE returning veterans should be supported. But I will applaud the presidentwhen he ends once and for all the senseless war in Afghanistan. The president simple does not get kudos from me for supporting a military hospital while he's engaged in sending more soldiers to that hospital. I prefer that the soldiers not be there in the first place, and I believe that is the president's number one job.

...not because it expresses opposition to the war, but because it hijacks this diary, though I don't believe that was your intention. I think President Obama is contributing to charities because he wants to help others and doesn't care about impressing anybody. I strongly oppose the war in Afghanistan, but I don't like it when a user pisses all over another user's diary, and that is what you have done, Castine. Have a nice life, and thank you for the donation you made on behalf of Julie Waters (and no, I don't think you did that to impress anybody, either).

      •  I apologize if that was how my comment appeared (1+ / 0-)

I certainly have no intention of highjacking this or any diary.
But I do feel that it's important to respond to this charge, in the sense that I made one dissenting opinion in a diary with over 100 comments. I have not been one to engage in polemical meta discussions here, but at the same time I thought people posted diaries on this site to discuss. If one can't offer a dissenting opinion in a reasonable tone, then what are we doing here?

    •  The women in Afghanistan (0+ / 0-)

will be slaughtered with a sudden pull out. There have been panels of woman (on PBS) who are out in the world, who have been able to get education or jobs who most want us to stay.

I'm asking you to believe. Not in my ability to bring about real change in Washington ... *I'm asking you to believe in yours.* Barack Obama
