    •  In which dictionary? (4+ / 0-)

You just laid out one of the criteria to diagnose someone.

      Not all of the criteria.

Kos should start a PvP server for this game.

      •  Criteria will resonate across the (8+ / 0-)

general traits given in the DSM-IV but are brought to point in

        •    Displays no feelings or shallow feelings
        •    Displays complete lack of empathy for others and their situation for which they are responsible

Foxx is generally smart enough to know that many others have to struggle for economic balance, including higher education, and that her votes and public comments do not reflect acknowledgement of their struggle.

Either she knows they struggle and deserve help and prenteds not to or she is disconnected from their plight.

diagnosis, and was not purposefully trying to quote the DSM or compare her behavior to that level of pathology (or I'd have done so more carefully!) - just using what I think of as a common definition of sociopath.  Common vernacular would dictate that someone who is unable to empathize with the needs of others or who acts with disregard for such things acts in a sociopathic manner.

Never having interviewed or even met the woman, of course it would be unethical to attempt a CLINICIAL diagnosis of her behavior.

She is not a true sociopath.  She may be mean spirited, she may be deceptive but I doubt seriously she is a true sociopath.

See my post a ways down below.

Thereisnospoon's writing always exhibits a depth of knowledge of economics and social justice. I don't know what he studied at UCLA or what he does for a living now, but I do know that it all added up to giving him a license to call Foxx a sociopath of the highest order.

    •  The term has a strict definition (0+ / 0-)

Everyone who uses it as you describe is flat out wrong.

      •  "Sociopath" is becoming the socially acceptable (0+ / 0-)

way of calling someone an asshole. Ms. Foxx is definitely one of those!

        If it's
        Not your body,
        Then it's
        Not your choice
        And it's
        None of your damn business!

        •  not without a think layer of hyperbole (0+ / 0-)

As a psych disorder it's technically a medical condition.

Saying an asshole is a sociopath is like saying someone with a cold has cancer.  I run a mental health support forum and have had unfortunate run ins with people who have more obscure Axis-II disorders.  Trust me, if you'd ever encountered anyone like this, you would not be making the error of conflating them with assholes.

            Glibness and Superficial Charm

            Manipulative and Conning
They never recognize the rights of others and see their self-serving behaviors as permissible. They appear to be charming, yet are covertly hostile and domineering, seeing their victim as merely an instrument to be used. They may dominate and humiliate their victims.

            Grandiose Sense of Self
Feels entitled to certain things as "their right."

            Pathological Lying
Has no problem lying coolly and easily and it is almost impossible for them to be truthful on a consistent basis. Can create, and get caught up in, a complex belief about their own powers and abilities. Extremely convincing and even able to pass lie detector tests.

Lack of Remorse, Shame or Guilt
A deep seated rage, which is split off and repressed, is at their core. Does not see others around them as people, but only as targets and opportunities. Instead of friends, they have victims and accomplices who end up as victims. The end always justifies the means and they let nothing stand in their way.

            Shallow Emotions
When they show what seems to be warmth, joy, love and compassion it is more feigned than experienced and serves an ulterior motive. Outraged by insignificant matters, yet remaining unmoved and cold by what would upset a normal person. Since they are not genuine, neither are their promises.

            Incapacity for Love

            Need for Stimulation
Living on the edge. Verbal outbursts and physical punishments are normal. Promiscuity and gambling are common.

            Callousness/Lack of Empathy
Unable to empathize with the pain of their victims, having only contempt for others' feelings of distress and readily taking advantage of them.

            Poor Behavioral Controls/Impulsive Nature
Rage and abuse, alternating with small expressions of love and approval produce an addictive cycle for abuser and abused, as well as creating hopelessness in the victim. Believe they are all-powerful, all-knowing, entitled to every wish, no sense of personal boundaries, no concern for their impact on others.

            Early Behavior Problems/Juvenile Delinquency
Usually has a history of behavioral and academic difficulties, yet "gets by" by conning others. Problems in making and keeping friends; aberrant behaviors such as cruelty to people or animals, stealing, etc.

Not concerned about wrecking others' lives and dreams. Oblivious or indifferent to the devastation they cause. Does not accept blame themselves, but blames others, even for acts they obviously committed.

            Promiscuous Sexual Behavior/Infidelity
Promiscuity, child sexual abuse, rape and sexual acting out of all sorts.

Lack of Realistic Life Plan/Parasitic Lifestyle
Tends to move around a lot or makes all encompassing promises for the future, poor work ethic but exploits others effectively.

            Criminal or Entrepreneurial Versatility
Changes their image as needed to avoid prosecution. Changes life story readily.

Unless I am very much mistaken, this describes most conservatives, and their candidates, to a tee.

            •  Where did you get your psych degree? (1+ / 0-)
              Recommended by:

It's a diagnosis that has to be made by a qualified mental health care professional after many hours of testing.

Besides, for something to qualify as a psych disorder it must interfere with the individual's ability to function in society.

Also, there are exceptions carved out for socially normative behavior.  We can't say that conservatives are sociopaths for the same reason we can't say that Christians are psychotic for believing in magical sky people.  It's behavior practiced by such a wide swath of society that can't be defined as abnormal by any standard.

              •  Don't have a psych degree, (0+ / 0-)

so think of it not as a diagnosis, but as an adjective.

And social normativity is a different question from the question of ethics and consequences. Think of a Godwin if you want a great example of a situation in which society can and is collectively behaving in a way that must be stopped. Were they insane or weren't they? Does it matter?

Call the (R) party and its members, then, non-clinical sociopathic, with these issues being serious enough to cause macrosocial dysfunction. It's so bad they can't function as society/would destroy society with their normative positions.

And if psych is this socially constructionist, then it's hardly more than a way to legitimate domination—a conflict theory playground.

                •  well, you're wrong (0+ / 0-)

Smearing people you disagree with by accusing them of having a medical condition is ableist, plain and simple.

Besides, are you really ready to say that everyone other than atheists are mentally ill?

                  •  I'd have to think about it for a while to be sure, (0+ / 0-)

but yes, I'd be inclined at first glance to say that religious devotion and observation is a form of mental illness, though this thread isn't about religion so I don't quite know where you're coming from. The reference to Godwin, if that's what you're talking about, is meant to point you toward Godwin's Law. Google it.

    •  In response to yourself and the parent, (0+ / 0-)

a majority of conservatives qualify. To my eye, having absolute disregard for the feelings and welfare of others, and reveling in that (to the point of working to undermine them even when it serves no personal interest or rational purpose, just to punish them for daring to exist) is the hallmark of conservative values.

A decent portion of conservatives would probably like to see most everyone around them dead just because they are "the competition" as human beings.
