  •  Where did you get your psych degree? (1+ / 0-)

It's a diagnosis that has to be made by a qualified mental health care professional after many hours of testing.

Besides, for something to qualify as a psych disorder it must interfere with the individual's ability to function in society.

Also, there are exceptions carved out for socially normative behavior.  We can't say that conservatives are sociopaths for the same reason we can't say that Christians are psychotic for believing in magical sky people.  It's behavior practiced by such a wide swath of society that can't be defined as abnormal by any standard.

so think of it not as a diagnosis, but as an adjective.

And social normativity is a different question from the question of ethics and consequences. Think of a Godwin if you want a great example of a situation in which society can and is collectively behaving in a way that must be stopped. Were they insane or weren't they? Does it matter?

Call the (R) party and its members, then, non-clinical sociopathic, with these issues being serious enough to cause macrosocial dysfunction. It's so bad they can't function as society/would destroy society with their normative positions.

And if psych is this socially constructionist, then it's hardly more than a way to legitimate domination—a conflict theory playground.

      •  well, you're wrong (0+ / 0-)

Smearing people you disagree with by accusing them of having a medical condition is ableist, plain and simple.

Besides, are you really ready to say that everyone other than atheists are mentally ill?

        •  I'd have to think about it for a while to be sure, (0+ / 0-)

but yes, I'd be inclined at first glance to say that religious devotion and observation is a form of mental illness, though this thread isn't about religion so I don't quite know where you're coming from. The reference to Godwin, if that's what you're talking about, is meant to point you toward Godwin's Law. Google it.
