  •  Noddy, I salute you. For not running your dear (20+ / 0-)

neighbor over with the mower.  You are a better human than I am.

Sigh, all kidding aside, with this ever end?

When I moved to the south, similar occurances happened to me.  Whether it was the auto dealership dude looking at & addressing my spouse-the entire time- with regards the vehicle I was buying or the cousin to your dude informing me that I had planted all the azealeas wrong...after I was finished...after watching me the entire time beer in hand..

Or another neighbor coming over to meet us when we were cooking out and the first words out of his mouth was to say he thought I was a little kid until he saw my boobs (apparantly spying while I was sunbathing).

20 plus years later, I never never dreamed I would be standing in 2012 in astonishment over still rampant chauvinist sexist behavoir of far too many.

    What is wrong with people???

    •  Not for as long as we (15+ / 0-)

keep teaching our sons that it's OK to be sexist.  That rape is the victim's fault.  That women don't deserve fair and equal pay.  That women are less valuable than a pre-embryo.  That women can't really choose to be a stay-at-home mom unless she marries a rich man.

I thought we'd made good inroads on this back in the 60's and early 70's, but it's flared up sosuddenly and viciously, it's like someone is deliberately fanning the flames.  The only way to get it this vicious and widespread is through the churches.

      All knowledge is worth having.

      •  I agree & raised my sons accordingly. I suppose (6+ / 0-)

it took since they honor gender equality in ways big & small..

        This!

Tis why I am astonished, bewildered & beyond angry standing here in our today of 2012.  I've already lived through that crap & fought too hard for my "sisters" to have it all undone.

Righteous anger as I protectively look at my nieces in college or my very young granddaughters.  Of late, feels akin to a circular firing squad, those flames.  Again, what is wrong with people?!

We did.  But the social change didn't reach every corner of America.  Noddy, you live in OK, so you know what I mean.

In fact, a lot of people pushed back against it (including more Baby Boomers than our movies like to admit). Hence the grand conservative reaction of the last thirty years.  Couple that with the rand-based classist business-worship of Conservativist ideology, and you get a powerful Republican party.

But the GOP was still always run by the Conservativists (the business side), who used the reactionary social conservatives for their votes, but never really delivered.  The Tea Party business occurred when the recession proved Conservatism wrong--- The reactionaries took over the party, and voilà.

But we're beating them.  Like a cornered animal, though, they're lashing out in desperation.  The vocal nature of the reactionary has encouraged those who are more low-level social conservatives, like your neighbor, to be more 'out' about their backwardness.  But it was always there.

Conservatives need to realize that their Silent Moral Majority is neither silent, nor moral, nor a majority.
