power outages that last for days routinely.  That's why I bought a corded phone.  I have two phones, corded and cordless.  I will never buy a cell phone.  I don't wish to be monitored by phone companies and the government.

    •  Virginia Power(?) (0+ / 0-)

My electric power in Florida via FPL is far more reliable despite the harsher conditions in Florida.

      •  Yes, I've lived in many different places and I (0+ / 0-)

never spent as much time without electricity as I have in the northern suburbs of Washington, DC.  But it is a problem in all suburban areas around DC.

We have lousy power companies and lousy government regulation of said companies.

        •  Dominion is better than Pepco though (0+ / 0-)

When I used to work in DC my colleagues from Maryland tended to lose power at the drop of a hat and for a lot longer than I did in Fairfax.  I can count on one hand my power outages of more than one hour in the nine years I've live in this house.

Most outages for me were due to storms, the worst being a thundersnow storm in 2010 where heavy winds, freezing rain, sleet and wet snow caused widespread tree damage.  Dominion brought in crews from the south, some guys from North Carolina fixed the lines on my street 2 days after the storm but some folks in Maryland and DC had no power for ten days!
