  •  The problem is, the Catholic Church does remember. (9+ / 0-)

It remembers when it had control of nations, kings, and peasants.  It remembers amassing wealth through that control.  It remembers itself as a power beyond states, and beyond the reach of the law.  It remembers acting with impunity.

The very real discrimination faced by individual Catholics in the past, whether in Ireland or in America or anywhere else, are only of concern to the Catholic Church insofar as it can use that discrimination to more tightly fold its flock to itself.

The Catholic Church is an institution interested in two things: its own power, and its own continuation.  I increasingly believe this to be true, witnessing their behavior in the past months and years.  (Mind you, they have this in common with many other institutions, religious and non-.)  The good works done by many Catholics in the name of their faith, are largely irrelevant to the high echelons on the Church.  They are good PR, busywork, and nothing more.

when it comes to women's rights and women's roles, they're playing the long game.  They've been around for almost two thousand years.

They're not interested in today or tomorrow.  They want to control what happens a hundred years from now.

When you think of how far we've slid back in terms of women's rights... how patriarchists have succeeded in vilifying abortion and making birth control -- birth control! -- a subject of debate in just the last few decades... are you really confident that they won't be winning in a hundred years?

      Because I'm not.

think in terms of 50 year time frames.

A friend of mine, who still deals with me, despite knowing of my hatred of organized religions, was the secretary of the last 50 yr. jesuit meet-up.

What we call god is merely a living creature with superior technology & understanding. If their fragile egos demand prayer, they lose that superiority.
