and Spanish speakers watch Telemundo and/or Univision -- even when they speak excellent English and watch English-language TV as well. They watch for the same reason I do, and why I watch al Jazeera and the BBC, too -- there is so much going on in the world that we never hear about from the U.S. media. al Jazeera English and both Spanish stations do a far better job of international news than US media. It really makes one realize how biased, narrow, and warmongering US teevee channels are.

Univision is owned by Haim Saban, a long-time solid Democrat. Telemundo started in Puerto Rico and is now owned by NBC Universal, a subsidiary of GE. More annoying is the new Rupert Murdoch channel, MundoFox, which aims to "bring Fox programming to the Latin population." It was announced in January, 2012, and they are trying to get on the air in time to influence the 2012 election, but they haven't yet announced any officers or schedule to come on the air.

Currently Univision and Telemundo reach 95% of all Spanish-speaking homes in the US. It may take MundoFox a little while to match that, even with all of Murdoch's money.

The reason they were the good old days: we were neither good nor old.
