As to gun shows, we strongly support gun shows and belive that all buyers at gunshows (but only at gunshows) should go thru the NICS background check system, thereby putting all sellers at shows on equal footing.
Why not just leave the gun show and sell in the parking lot to avoid the NICS? Private sales @ gun shows are still private sales.

Gun shows are inherently different from the sale you or I would make in a "private sale".  I would only sell a gun to a friend, a neighbor, a co-worker or a relative.  In any case I know who I sold the gun too.  At a gun show, just like at a retail store I have no idea who comes over to my table to buy a firearm.  Running them thru NICS is simple and takes the wind out of the anti's sails on gun shows.  I would oppose private sales requiring the NICS check - it's stupid.
Fair question about the parking lot. First I would give the seller at a gun show the same protection that the industry has from lawsuits if done thru NICS.  Anyone who says "I'll give you an extra $50 to sell it to me outside" not only loses the liability protection but creates a presumption that something is wrong.
You and I know that very few guns (maybe1%) sold at gun shows would be prevented from a NICS check.  It sure won't stop gunshows from being successful markets, just the anti's from claiming it's a criminal operation.  Furthermore there are around 500,000 guns stolen each year.  Preventing a few bad guys from obtaining guns at gunshows will have NO impact on criminals obtaining guns.  It will preserve and protect the future of gunshows.

      •  set up like you describe I could probably get (8+ / 0-)

behind that as a solution to the anti's rhetoric...As long as private sales were preserved and there was either no fee or a very minimal fee say 5 bucks to run the NICS.....

Anyone who says something like you describe should be an immediate red flag for the seller and if it's me, the sale goes to the next table.

The private sale needs to be preserved though, a few months back I traded 5 for 1 very collectable Remington Express rifle that I had wanted for years.....In a state like Ca where where every transfer must go through an ffl, it could have cost us 600 bucks to do a simple trade moving a gun from one safe to another......

      •  I'm not entirely sure I agree with you.... (4+ / 0-)

(going to have to mull that over a bit), but recced for the novel approach.  Not an angle I had even conceived of before.
