... calling the Buffett Rule a "gimmick" or "kabuki theater," even though they didn't give Paul Ryan's budget a similar name. What they don't realize -- or try to minimize -- is that the Buffett Rule is just part of a larger "comprehensive plan" to make the tax code fairer for regular folks, and not enrich the 1%.

Republicans have taken the same tack with the just-announced plans from President Obama to curb oil market manipulation. Republican Speaker John Boehner is already on record as calling it a "gimmick." Again, this was part of a comprehensive proposed plan that includes administrative regulations (that the President can accomplish) and new congressional regulations and funding (that will require assistance from Congress).

Like support for the Buffett Rule, a huge majority of Americans don't want the energy market manipulation of a few to unfairly enrich them at the expense of everyone else.

What President Obama is doing is stretching the Overton Window so that we can see -- on the horizon -- a curbing of illegal and immoral energy market speculation (and see fair taxes on millionaires and billionaires), energize Democratic Party voters who want to see these comprehensive plans implemented, and to further distinguish Republican values (Corporations and Millionaires First!) from Democratic values.

The challenge is clear:  Gain a majority in the House and a working majority in the Senate.

    •  Unfortunately, even that won't be enough, (2+ / 0-)

as our experience from 2008-2010 showed. What we need to do, if we get those things, is restore majority rule in the Senate. Without that, we're done.

... it a "working majority" in the Senate!  We do that by restoring majority rule in that body or electing 60 Democratic (or Democratic-leaning independent) Senators.

(I haven't thought through "restoring majority rule in the Senate," I confess, so at this point, I just want to get 60 Senators who aren't brain dead!).

so it's filibuster reform or bust.
