and always thought it had an other-worldly sound.  ;)

in my humble opinion of course. I still listen to them regularly, 40+ years on. I had heard of Mitchell originally because some of her songs had been recorded by others who were, at the time, better-known, such as for example Buffy Sainte-Marie and Tom Rush. Judy Collins' hit cover of "Both Sides Now" didn't arrive until about the time "Song to a Seagull" was released while the other artists' versions of 'Tin Angel' and 'The Circle Game' already were receiving some radio play a year earlier. As far as I can discern the first Joni Mitchell songs to appear on record were on Buffy Sainte-Marie's 1967 album, "Fire & Fleet & Candlelight." Rush's album which used "The Circle Game"as the title track appeared in December '68 but I most definitely recall hearing that as well as "Tin Angel" before I heard Joni's version of it (even though it's on "Song to a Seagull").

I stumbled upon "Song to a Seagull" essentially by accident shortly before heading off to my freshman year in college. Imagine how excited I was to see her on the campus concert schedule! At that point she was performing mainly the songs from those first two albums, some of which of course were not yet available on recordings. Needless to say I dogged my local record stores for months waiting for "Clouds" to appear.
