  •  You can have 10 kids but Welfare DeFormed only (5+ / 0-)

...allows support for 2 children no more.  Sorry but the "more kids" meme is merely showing ignorance for what this law did to poor women.

    Besides that:

    > Over 80% of women on welfare were married
    > One of the major reasons they seek welfare is because they cannot collect child support
    > Vermont made a law that paid women child support whether or not the dad paid and it reduced poverty by 40%.
    > If you are a legal immigrant, you will not qualify for any of these services except housing assistance and that has up to a 6 year waiting list in most cities.
    >  Working for a wage is the only thing that poor women can do that counts, caring for their kids is "doing nothing."

Poverty is not a "choice, it is an  Institution .  This institution is based on racism, sexism, ageism, classism and disabilities.

    in·sti·tu·tion  [in-sti-too-shuhn, -tyoo-]

a well-established and structured pattern of behavior or of relationships that is accepted as a fundamental part of a culture

Institutions are kept in place because they benefit someone, in this case the upper classes.  The poor benefit the upper classes in many ways.  The poor are kept in place because they are cheap labor, tax deductions, job creators, handy political footballs, used as camouflage to disguise racism, classism, sexism, hatred, disdain for disabled people, and ageism.

PLEASE consider your words because you are only showing your propensity to hate and blame the poor, which is unbecoming to a true liberal.

    •  Good to know. Does this vary from state to state? (1+ / 0-)

Or is it Federal? Seems someone is often telling me those welfare people just keep having kids to get more money. (then oppose free/low cost birth control). I don't know enough about welfare rules to fight back.

      Oh for crying out loud!

      •  It is part of the federal mandate (0+ / 0-)

Lots of people believe this ~ the "have more kids in order to get more money" meme has been around since the 1960s.

The truth is whatever amount of kids you have even if there were "more money" it would not be enough to provide for them, since at this time  is about $110 per month per child ($220 fior two kids). ?what could you do with that since it is't enough to pay for housing without a subsidy???

I also forgot to mention that most states have a lifetime limit on these benefits.  Many states allow just 2 years, but the federal mandates "generously" allows 5 years as a lifetime limit.  After that there is nothing for these families and in depressed areas where there is no work, this is devastating.  This is in thanks to the Republicans who wrote this crap with the willing cooperation of a heartless Democratic president who signed it into law ~ to his wife who went around the country with Joe Liebermann crowing about how "successful" it was.

Want to know WHY it was considered "successful"??? Because all they counted was how rolls had fallen, They did not have a single clue about what happened to these families and their kids, or where they went. They even BLOCKED studies waiting to be done about what was happening to these families, BECAUSE THEY DID NOT WANT TO KNOW AND THEY DID NOT WANT US TO KNOW.

I write about is stuff all the time.  It is beyond disgusting but since poverty is not "sexy" it seldom gets much notice.  Who cares until they come after them, right?  (bitter laugh).
