    •  Sweden is not the US (0+ / 0-)

and a local swedish artist will use a different artistical language that you someone in the US would.

Your diary is the artistic equivalent of an American  theater critic judging a Swedish play in Sweden by complaining about the ugly sounding Swedish language.

This is an art installation, and the point is artistic grasp of the critique on female genital mutilation.

But, hey, why not start complaining about entartete Kunst outright? The concept has tradition...

      •  The Venus Hottentot is the Venus (6+ / 0-)

Hottentot.  And as an artist immersed for years in the European art community, I'm perfectly aware of local variations on symbolic interpretation.

Your comment betrays your own cluelessness about manifestations of racism in Europe. Just because an installation piece is intended to critique female genital mutilation doesn't give it a pass on invoking European racist traditions.  Kitimbwa Sabuni, spokesperson for the National Afro-Swedish Association was horrified, and who are you to tell Afro-Swedish people they don't get it?

You may not intend it, but you're excusing racism right here and right now.

          behind it?

make of it what you will, but it's more complicated, as things always are.

Looking at some of his other art and his take on it I don't get the sense that he's an artist who sets out to make people comfortable.

I do have to figure this goes in the "what the fuck were they thinking?" files though.

critiquing him in the body of diary.  If it was his intent to get Swedish progressives to show their asses, he succeeded brilliantly.  As I mentioned in the comments below, I've got at least one friend whose installations & performance art is directed at reflecting people's racism right back at them by evoking racist performances.  But the people who willingly played the roles he set out for them certainly deserve to have their racism pointed out.  Pieces in which the audience is the art piece have a long tradition.

            As I also said below....

I absolutely believe that Linde is sophisticated enough to devise the entire scene to get progressive Swiss "antiracists" to show their "true colors" in public, though I certainly question the gender politics of the piece. (Do we really have to do this via a spectacularized and violated female body, and why the Venus Hottentot, when he could have chosen a male body to violate instead? Why does he have to use a black female body to illustrate his black male position in the elite art world?)
As you said, none of this is simple, but showcasing racism in a successful art piece doesn't make the racism that's displayed any less real.  Any white progressive with a lick of sense about race and racial imagery would have fled the room or maintained a sober demeanor, especially with all those cameras around.

My understanding from the very odd translation is that the prime minister was in on the performance as well. It seems she had lines to deliver.

would play that role in public.  It's hardly as benign as a performance on Saturday Night Live.  In my eyes, an artist has a responsibility to his or her artistic vision.  But a politician has a responsibility to her or her constituents, and clowning (if this was conscious clowning) in that fashion is bound to backfire. Perhaps the Afro-Swedish Association is humorless, but I think it's more likely that they see the larger social ramification of such artistic "play".  And, remember, this is happening in the country right next door to Norway, where children were just murdered for their immigrant status, and where the trial of the mass murderer is ongoing.  Whether this is a clever play on an old trope, and whether it was deliberately inflammatory or not, the outcome (white folks enacting racism) is not pretty.

I think that's right.  It is good for no one here.

(as a side note, the kids murdered in Norway were killed not because of their immigration status, but because they were white progressives who purportedly supported immigrant rights).

that political retreat was very integrated, and a number of the victims were immigrants or the children of immigrants. The white victims were killed because they supported immigrant rights.  The immigrant kids were killed because of that and because of who they were.  And those kids were very important to the immigrant communities from which the sprang because they represented the hope of an integrated Norwegian future.
