culture of obedience.  To extract obedience is essentially abusive, but many victims of abuse come to love their abusers.  Why is that?  Because, as is evident by the culture of obedience, the victims is convinced that subservience and self-sacrifice is a virtue. Thus, praise acts as a balm to the spirit and compensates for not being free.  In addition, obedience is a universal "get out of jail free" card.  The obedient person can do no wrong.  To surrender one's independence for a guarantee to be always right is irresistible to many.

reflect obedience?  It may very well be true that not all bishops buy into his crap, but the official position of the U.S. bishops is what it is.  He's being neither obedient nor subservient.

Most Catholics don't toe the full line.  Plenty of us are good, faithful people who do good works and follow Jesus the best we can within the faith that we profess.  I guess we use the organization of the Church to come together to be church.  Could we do that in other ways?  Perhaps.  Would we?  Perhaps not.
