  •  How fascinating! Progressives can now agree ... (8+ / 0-)

... with Lazard, a cornerstone of the capitalist empire.

I say this with snark in mind, because so many of us are wired to reject just about any advice from such a source as self-serving, against the public interest, a pawn of the wealthiest, etc. So lets carry this further.

Imagine what the Post Office could do if a Lazard-like management consultant (they are legion) who was willing (oops, now perhaps the field gets more limited because of present and future conflicts and the prospect of bad business press) proposed the kinds of services to the public at competitive rates that some commenters above have mentioned. And perhaps offering enhanced access to other Federal government entities (such as the passport services already being provided): correspondence with Congress, applications to executive branch agencies (e.g. Social Security), etc.

Of course, the anti-government forces would have a field day arguing how government might thus be "subsidizing" traditionally private and competitive services ... but that, too, would be a fight worth having.

Obama and strong Democratic majorities in 2012!
