  •  But Obama DID in fact discourage Vegas travel (1+ / 0-)

You can’t go take a trip to Las Vegas or go down to the Super Bowl on the taxpayers’ dime. There’s got to be some accountability and some responsibility.
Actually, government agencies, corporations, and associations CAN host meetings in places like Las Vegas and still be responsible and have accountibility. The latest brou-ha-ha involving the GSA happens to involve Vegas, but that meeting in question never would have been questioned if it were't for the irresponsible and unaccountable (and unethical) lapses in judgment by some people who should have known better.

Those lapses inflated the cost of the event, to be sure, but the cost of the bipartisan grandstanding in all of the recent Congressional investigations will likely exceed the amount of the unethical components of that meeting.

Vegas has great hotels that have huge amounts of meeting space and they're very competitive with each other, which can lead to Vegas being a better value destination than keeping the meeting in DC (for gov't agencies) or by placing meetings in 2nd/3rd tier cities that don't have the airfare advantages of a destination like Vegas. And, it's a union-friendly city, which can't be said everywhere (ask the Netroots Nation organizers about that).

All that being said, yeah, Romney's out on a limb criticizing Obama for living the life of luxury. As my grandmother used to say, "he'd be better off sweeping around his own back porch."
