  •  Violate Marketing Rules At One's Peril (15+ / 0-)

I'm retired now but among other things I did when I was working was organize commercial presentations at trade shows for teachers. I always made certain in advance that the venue was always slightly smaller than the crowd we expected. The result was always a packed house with people standing in the aisles on the perimeter, and more looking to get through the door. That sold the crowd and anyone who peeked in that our presenter and topic were worth their time.

I made sure never to book a room that would be too large. Romney's campaign does not understand that marketing fundamental any more than they understand Economics 101.

    •  Romney's campaign (4+ / 0-)

doesn't understand a lot of things.

Here's their thinking in a nutshell - If Obama does it, so do we.

If Obama books a 65000 seat stadium, so do we. Even if nobody is likely tho show up.

If Obama talks at a factory, so do we. Even if it's closed, has been closed, and closed on OUR watch.

If Obama rescues a kitten from a tree, so do we. Even if the  Kitty in the tree is there to cut it down. (Think Keith Stone commercials)

Romney campaign theme song - anything you can do, I can do kinda.

fuckup. The first part was selling far too many tickets for the size of the original venue, a hotel ballroom. The second was having no backup plan, and not knowing that every other appropriate venue was booked--concerts, basketball, the auto show was in town, etc.

Mitt's handlers probably figured Detroit was a wasteland, with nothing going on--after all, they aren't from Michigan (and neither is Mitt, really). I'm sure they were shocked to find that people actually, you know, do stuff around here.

      I thought it was hilarious.
