  •  If you do it politely and clearly, there are (14+ / 0-)

generally others nearby who over hear.  And although they likely would never instigate a discussion, they often feel the same way you do and are quietly encouraged by knowing they aren't in the minority.

Part of the bullying cowardice and ignorance that the authoritarians express comes from thinking knowing they are always right and everyone not in agreement is always evil wrong and they are clearly the majority and favored opinion.  And they aren't !!

So take advantage where you can, and politely discuss issues using those awful commie bastard facts actual verifiable data.

    •  exactly. (9+ / 0-)

The conversation is for those who are politely eavesdropping out of curiosity, not those whose minds are firmly entrenched.

It's also important to acknowledge when I've made an error. If someone says I'm misinterpreting some of the data and can explain rationally with evidence why, it does no harm to say "You're right, thanks", then carry on the discussion friom there.

Mwaaaahhaaaaaaa!  Fat chance.  Evidence means facts, and they're a bit short on those.

But if I looked up and the pigs were airborne, I'd do exactly as you say!

    •  In any public exchange (newspaper comment (7+ / 0-)

section, etc) what we say should be aimed at the uncommitted, or "soft" partisans, even though it's often the rabid partisans who are actually arguing with us.

The people on the margins are the ones who change.  A rabid one -- well, you might give some input that might help them change five years from now, with a lot of other things happening in the meantime -- but you're not going to get their vote for Obama this year.
