  •  Life inside the bubble (7+ / 0-)

Having been outside the US for a few months now I have some interesting insights that may or may not help you.

    1. The media inside the US seems to be pushing the "End of the World" shit. Outside of the US media bubble, not so much.

    2. When I was in the states I would often over consume mass media and it depressed the shit out of me. Times are tough, but there seems to be a concerted effort  to create the impression that they are hopeless. I found that when I stopped being a consumer and started be a producer, my mental state turned around.

    3. I started producing in my own life, because it was the only thing that I had any control over. For me that meant seeking out alternative choices for my life and work. Instead of being locked in to living how we always had, it meant simplifying, downsizing, and discovering the things that were really important to us.

For us that meant a travel lifestyle where we go where the money is. This was easy for us since we don't have a lot of family ties or close friends. What we found was that by becoming the driver and essentially ignoring the other traffic on the road, you can escape most of the negativity that pervades the "driven to work so you can consume more," America Dream.

Look at your life with fresh eyes. At the very least you can take some time away from all the negative and really appreciate those things that you do have.

    Stay strong.

cannot.  I am a veterans advocate and in the heat of things MOST of the time.  I am in the heat of them from my own local area to the halls of congress.  I do get down but I can't throw the game.  I have to stay in it and heavily.

maybe when you have time off, really take it off, get some of those small moments of paradise living on earth can provide.

When I was in highschool I read Solzhenitsyn's One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovitch.  Here was a guy in an intolerable situation --a slave in Siberia-- who managed to make a few tiny moments (a good trowel, a crust of bread) each day give him enough joy to keep his soul alive.

prioritize my abilities as we should be rational enough to know we are no super hero but there are many so lost in this ball of confusion and so many of us with huge responsibilities to help them find their way.  It is kinda like watching people die in slow motion.. That sounds harsh but I am seeing things I have never seen before and reminds me of Katrina in many ways.

government and our media. Everywhere we go we have to go through security checkpoints and we just accept that we take our shoes off now all the time. Even to get into the courthouse for jury duty. It makes it seem like they catch dangerous people trying to bomb or shoot us constantly.

A few weeks ago our local schools were on code red lockdown for HOURS because someone called one school and threatened to hurt themself and others. Because one school was threatened (sort of) SWAT came to that school and the other schools had kids sitting under desks in the dark and peeing in trash cans in the corner for several hours. Another time someone called the police and reported seeing a person carrying something that looked like a gun a few blocks away from a school. Two schools locked down with kids in the dark on the floor for an hour.  It was an old man with a cane.

We have decided to live in fear and to keep ourselves "safe" we are willing to wait in lines to get into anywhere we want to go just so they can search our shoes and our bags and find....what, exactly?
