  •  One problem with some formulations of karma (6+ / 0-)

is their implications for suffering. I am skeptical of any interpretation, for instance, that an eight year old that is sexually abused deserved it.

Is it true? Is it kind? Is it necessary? . . . and respect the dignity of every human being.

    •  No, that would be a misinterpretation. (3+ / 0-)

I think. It would also require the belief that life is basically predetermined, when everything that happens to you is a consequence of your karma. This would be very fiddlesome to argue out, though.

Better look at the explanation by Mindful Nature just above, I like it very much!

    •  thanks for bringing this up (0+ / 0-)

'karma' is a term that is almost exclusively mis-used not just here on DKos but nearly every time it's mentioned. karma is simple causality. you don't refrain from doing bad things to avoid "giving yourself bad karma", karma just results from actions. you refrain from doing bad things because doing 'bad things' causes more bad things to happen, generally. it's not all about 'me'. karma is throwing a seed onto a patch of ground, and then a tree eventually grows. not because a tree 'deserved' to be there, but simply because someone took the action of throwing the seed. etc.
