    I went through loads of collections of horror stories as a teen, esp. those Alfred Hitchcock anthologies (long out of print, I'm sure), also sci-fi. That way the lad might find more authors he likes and move on to their novels, if any. I also concur with the graphic novel recs.

      The year's best Sci-Fi Anthologies... I also went through Asimov's anthologies in my teen years, and Stephen King's...

        The Long Walk - the Bachman books are a good place to start.

          Skeleton Crew, After Midnight, NIghtmares and Dreamscapes, and yes, the Bachmen books, though that's not one of my favorites by him :).
