  •  We are a sick society; I do not mean sick as the (11+ / 0-)

Fundamentalist preachers proclaim but what we accept as norms in society, even among the Bluenoses.  Watching some few minutes of some of the "reality" shows surfing today I noticed several shows concerned with toddlers and beauty contests while yet others were about pre-pubescent girls and dance schools.  In each case, the children were dressed up as if they were far older than they were.
Why can't children compete as children?  Why must they be sexualized and objectified?  While such competitions in and of themselves are not bad (Disclosure: I have one granddaughter who competes in local pageants though not to the degree evidently displayed on these shows)
at the same time, the question has to be asked as to what is the goal of such competitions and at what degree do such competitions become improper?

    •  thank you ... (8+ / 0-)

thank you for saying this.  I feel the same way.

I totally am not into this beauty pageant thing.  But that's me.  If parents want their children to compete - so be it - but let them portray themselves as children!!  Children can be beautiful without making them into mini-adults and douse them with mascara, rouge, and lipstick.  children can show their talents in dance and singing without being dressed up in dress mimicking grown women (ie ala Madonna in her bra and lace stage)

All the suffering of this world arises from a wrong attitude. The world is neither good or bad. It is only the relation to our ego that makes it seem the one or the other - Lama Anagorika Govinda
