This diary highlights some of the myriad of problems brought on by prison privatization.  I echo previous comments that privatizing prisons creates a slave labor force and does a disservice to the concept of rehabilitation and the humane treatment of our prison population.

Earlier this year, the Rethug Florida legislature proposed the privatization of a number of Florida prisons.  There are currently seven private prisons  in Florida. During testimony before the legislature, state of Florida prison officials testified that the education and quality of the prison employees at the private facilities was far below that required for state prison employees.

The privatization proposal that was before the legislature would require that the state ensure that the private prisons were kept at a minimum 90% capacity. Florida already has a sentencing law that is so stringent that it basically prevents parole.  Felons are required to serve a minimum of 85% of their sentence.  This made Florida particularly attractive to the for profit prison industry.

The privatization bill did not pass mainly due to oppostion from several Republican legislators in whose districts the prisons proposed for privatization were located and whose constituents were very angry about the privatization proposal.  But I am willing to bet it comes back again.

glad to hear the bill didn't make it through - but you are probably correct that it will show up again.

      Thanks for posting that background.

          Here are some snips.

Scott, former CEO of hospital giant Columbia/HCA, came into office on a mission to privatize Florida government. Scott left HCA as the company was being investigated for the “biggest Medicare fraud case in U.S. history.”  Columbia/HCA ultimately paid a record $1.7 billion in fines, penalties and damages.

Scott has already proposed privatizing the state’s Medicaid system, state park campgrounds, the state’s three remaining public mental hospitals, three centers for the developmentally disabled and six veterans’ homes.

The two largest prison companies, Corrections Corporation of America (CCA) and GEO Group (formerly Wackenhut), are poised to strike, in what Judith Greene, director of Justice Strategies calls, “an unprecedented” expansion of the use of private prisons that no other state has undertaken
