I mean, my mom is a North Carolina native and is currently living there. So I do have a fair amount of southern blood in me and it's not for me to write off the South as some hopeless backwater or something that needs to be allowed to drift away. I do think it makes it all the more urgent to call it out though, because it's my honest opinion that many people who run the states of affair in the South have not gotten over the Civil War and continue attempts to undermine the powers of government. As Rick Pearlstein pointedly observed, it's not that conservatives and their philosophies themselves have become more crazy or fringe lately, it's that they've always been in existence, though they've been dormant all these years under the wings of fairly tolerable presidents (Clinton, being the last such Democrat.) The inauguration of Barack Obama has created a lot of friction for them to begin mobilizing in astounding, shocking ways. Arizona has picked up that virus, and Jan Brewer clearly has become such a darling to southern governors. Hopefully, the come uppance of Joe Arpaio will dovetail nicely and gut the psyche of people who think they can get away with these acts of inhumanity. But hey, these people have finally found their match (Obama) and conservative backwardness is well fueled, against that backdrop. Sorry to get so broad on this, but I do think it's a relevant issue at hand here, and why it seems that so many on the NPR comments page seem to be justifying this deplorable prison and the like. Extremities of the private sector are continuously being justified by a significant portion of the population.
