  •  Austerity destroys economies (10+ / 0-)

The reactionaries don't care what harm they do. They have a religious dogma about economics that they intend to impose on every country. Spain and the UK are suffering today. Will the US be next?

The GOP is the party of mammon. They mock what Jesus taught.

    •  there is a mantra seen in Spain, Ireland (5+ / 0-)

Greece, Portugal, Italy and other countries which is if at first austerity does not cure decades of looting and pillage by the wealthy and well connected, the solution is to have more austerity until the poor pay for the excesses of their social betters.

OTOH France and Germany opted for government investment in social safety nets, HCR, strengthening unions and basically doing the opposite of what austerity experts demand.

So of the two sets of nations, guess which group is in economic recovery and which ones are set to institute a new round of austerity measures?

      •  Spain had socialist governments (3+ / 0-)

Spain was so poor under Franco that moving to Mexico or Argentina was a good career move.

But under socialist Felipe Gonzalez, Spain reached unprecedented levels of prosperity.

Hey, Spain got so rich that they could afford to let a nitwit like me work there under the table for a few months.

As the slightly-illegal foreign temp intern; I was the only nonunion employee that I knew of where I worked.

      •  Of course, Germany could only provide (0+ / 0-)

        those benefits under two circumstances.

        1. Keep demand down at home, stoke it through vendor financing in the periphery. Without this mercantilist beggar-thy-neighbor approach, Germany can't keep doing what it's doing.

        2. The euro is valued lower than the DM otherwise would be.

There are two kinds of people in this world. The kind who divide the world into two kinds of people, and the kind who don't.

until morale improves.  What a winning strategy!

    •  Wh is it called "austerity," which actually has (0+ / 0-)

some positive overtones in the minds of many? I grew up hearing this from my folks, who grew up in the last part of the Depression:

      Eat it up,
      Wear it out.
      Make it do--
      Do without.

Of course that's what the most of us are being told is how the Kleptocracy plans to order our future for us...
